Located in the metropolitan Atlanta area, DeKalb is the fourth most populous county in the state, with approximately 735,000 residents, according to 2016 U.S. Census Community Facts population estimates.

In addition to a portion of Atlanta, several cities have joined Decatur: Avondale Estates, Brookhaven, Chamblee, Clarkston, Doraville, Dunwoody, Lithonia, Pine Lake, Stone Mountain and Tucker.

As part of the county's budget process, the county has a defined vision, mission and values. They will be used as the foundation for shaping the goals, strategies and action steps in the strategic plan.

Statement of Vision: To build a new consensus for a better DeKalb County.

Mission: To make the priorities of the citizens of DeKalb County; the priorities of County government - by achieving a safer DeKalb, building stronger neighborhoods, creating a fiscally accountable and more efficient county government and uniting the citizens of DeKalb County.
